East Strandir - A West Fjord´s secret

East Strandir, a remote area of north west Iceland is untouched and outstanding. Despite its inaccessibility, a handful of hardy locals live there all year round keeping the warm community spirit alive, protecting the endangered eider ducks and gathering their feathery down (which is worth more than its weight in gold!). Due to its outstanding purity and wildlife, East Strandir and the magnificent Drangajökull glacier are just now on the threshold of being declared a protected area, an idea that would oppose efforts to dam its rivers for industrial electricity production.
